Najib's Cabinet line-up (update)

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today announced his much awaited cabinet which saw eight ministers dropped and seven new faces appointed.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who won the Umno deputy presidency in last month’s party elections, was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister.

The cabinet has been slashed from 32 ministers to 28 but the number of deputy ministers increased from 38 to 40.

At the same time, the number of ministries have been reduced from 28 to 25 with the merger of two ministries. A separate portfolio has also been created to oversee national unity under the PM's Department.

The eight ministers dropped from the new line-up are Syed Hamid Albar (Home Affairs), Muhammad Muhd Taib (Rural and Regional Development), Azalina Othman Said (Tourism), Ong Ka Chuan (Housing and Local Government), Senator Amirshah A Aziz (Minister in the PM's Department), Mohd Zin Mohamed (Works), Douglas Uggah Embas (Natural Resources and Environment) and Zulhasnan Rafique (Federal Territories).

Two of the seven appointed as full ministers were promoted from their deputy minister's posts.

Among the seven is Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon who has been appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Unity and Performance Management.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has been conspicuosly left out, but Mukhriz Mahathir was made deputy minister of International Trade and Industry and the deputy Youth chief, Datuk Razali Ibrahim, appointed a deputy minister of the Youth and Sports ministry.

Sabah has increased its representation in the cabinet from three ministers in the previous cabinet to four while there is no change for Sarawak which has two ministers.

In a brief 15-minute statement before announciing the new line-up, Najib said the cabinet reflected the government's aim to focus on people-first paradigm.

Najib said he would personally evaluate the performance of each minister every six months.

"I will be personally involved in reviewing the progress of all ministers every six months to ensure their performance is on track, and where it is not, work with them and the civil service to ensure that we remove the barriers to their success," he said.

A pretty good line-up.

But...but that Noh Mat Yaakob should have been retired & Khaled Nordin too.

However, I am glad that Mat-Taib- I-No-speak- English, Hamed Al Blur, not-so-straight-Azalina- Othman have been dropped. Good for you Najib.

And yes, yes KJ the SIL has been left out too.

Now you newly appointed Ministers & deputy Ministers move yr butt and go immediately to work and serve us, the rakyats.

Just remember what the PM said: Rakyat first!!

Looks like Najib is smarter than Pak
Lah.All Pak Lah's men and also woman had been sidelined. As predicted Pak Lah will fade away without any tangible legacy. As expected the quixotic and sometimes idiotic minister of Home Affairs have also disappeared.Naming the kris-waving chap as the replacement, however, is not very wise!Keeping Rais Yatim, the loser in the UMNO election, and also appointing Dr.
Mahathir's son as a deputy minister
are smart ,calculative moves.Let's hope that Najib will not appoint the old "apanama" as the "unofficial advisor"!It will be even more disastrous than Pak Lah's dependence on his son-in-law and the 4th floor boys!

I am not a member of any political party. But I always have the most admiration for our former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

But that doesnt mean I'm pro-Umno/BN.

Hey, I voted frop Barisan Rakyat in the last GE simply because I was fed up with Pak Lah who had no clue as how to lead the country.

Anyway a lot of accusation has been thrown at Dr M like he had a hand in the selection of the Ministers in Najib’s new cabinet, especially with regards to the appointment of his son, Mukhriz.

I was interested in what marina had to say. So I keep going to her blog to see if she would comment on the new line up and the comments alleging that her dad had a part in choosing some of the cabinet ministers and demanding that her brother, Mukhriz be included in the new line-up.

Am glad she gave her two sens. And I certainly agree with her comments.

OF, everyone's favourite theory these days is that my Dad pressured Najib into taking Mukhriz and whoever else. OK, let's take it the other way round. What would a completely independent Najib Cabinet look like? I am truly interested to know exactly who would be in it.

I reckon everybody has political considerations when they pick the Cabinet. That's the way it works, whether BN or PR.We don't have the American system where they can pick people completely outside politics if they want.I might have had a chance at being Health or Gender Minister otherwise. Oh wait, I'm a Mahathir too...dang!

I think people make too much of Mukhriz being in there personally. Deputy Ministers have very little power at all from what I can see.(And I'm pitifully uninterested in cars...ask my hubby.)

And Najib can't win. If he puts KJ in, everyone will still jump on him for keeping someone who was found guilty of corruption in the UMNO elections.

He could however have dumped Noh Omar and Johari Baharum though. Dad is certainly NOT keen on dear old Jo. But he's there. And Ismail Sabri, Shaziman and Shabery. So yeah, guess he had plenty to do with this.

No I don't think this Cabinet is great. Until I see one that's 50% women, I am not impressed.
