KUALA KUBU BARU: Barisan Nasional gained a parliamentary seat last night when P.Kamalanathan defeated Datuk Zaid Ibrahim of Parti Keadilan Rakyat with a 1,725-vote majority in the Hulu Selangor by-election.

This is the first parliamentary by-election win for BN since the March 2008 nationwide polls, following defeats in Permatang Pauh (August 2008), Kuala Terengganu (January last year) and Bukit Gantang (April last year).

The Hulu Selangor contest, the focal point of national politics over the past twoweeks, coincides with Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s first full year in office asprime minister.

This marks a back-to-back by-election win for BN following the success in BaganPinang in October last year, which followed a near-victory in the July 2009 by-election for Manek Urai, retained by Pas with a majority of 65.

Bagan Pinang and Manek Urai are state constituencies in Negri Sembilan and Kelantan, respectively. ...continue here

7.49pm: Unofficial results

According to BN sources, P Kamalanathan (MIC) is leading Zaid Ibrahim (PKR) by about 2,000 votes.

PKR leaders have unofficially conceded defeat.

BN - 21,354
PKR - 19,917
Majority - 1,437
