The King Hath Spoken...

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abdidin today stressed that neither he nor Istana Negara had indirectly or directly supported the massive rally held over the weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Bernama, the King, in a rare statement issued via a palace official, expressed regret over the claim that he and Istana Negara had supported Saturday’s illegal gathering.

The King, in a rare statement issued via a palace official, expressed regret over the claim that he and Istana Negara had supported Saturday’s illegal gathering.

The rally, organised by the opposition-backed polls watchdog Bersih, saw some 40,000 people taking to the streets to press for electoral reforms. A memorandum was also submitted to Istana Negara.

Tuanku Mizan stressed that he did not lend his support to any quarters which had organised the rally or involved in any activities which flout the law.

On Monday, PAS secretary-general Kamaruddin Jaffar claimed that Bersih had decided to submit a memorandum to the King after his Highness had given them his tacit approval.

Tuanku Mizan said as the country’s supreme leader, it is incumbent upon him to ensure that the administration of the country as enshrined in the Federal Constitution is adhered to by all.

Bernama has the story here

Whatever it is, "we, the people, have done our bit and the Agong has done his bit. History has been made on 10-eleven and cannot be unmade." says Rocky.

"BERSIH didn't ask the Agong to support the 10-eleven march. What we wanted was for the Palace to look into our grievances. And those who marched did so demanding reforms in the electoral reforms, NOT to drag the Agong into the mud of partisan politics."

Indeed! The King, being a constitutional monarchy, the supreme commander and a sovereign, is above politics. The march/rally and presentation of the memorandum to the palace was purely symbolic.

Read what Nuraina A Samad has to say on this in her entry Titah Tuanku here:

Good of the Agong to response to the Pas sec-gen. These ex-Umno politicians cakap lepas2 aje, just like their ex-colleagues. I suppose you can take out a guy out of Umno but you can't take out the Umno from that guy.

Now, we wait for what the Raja2 think of the memorandum submitted to the Agong demanding electoral reforms.

I do agree with what Nuraina wrote.

I also agree with you too - that the march to the palace and the presentation of the BERSIH memo was purely symbolic.

Being the Sovereign Head, the Yang diPertuan Agong has to remain neutral. He cannot be partisan.

He has distanced himself from the rally. Rightly so. But he didn’t throw away the memorandum. That speaks volume.

As far as we are concerned that is good enough.

And I say: Daulat Tuanku!

Dear Tok Mommy
I think that the Rakyat were "led to believe" that the King did not consent to last Saturday's gathering.

Thanks to your link, I read Raja Petra's comment and this gave a totally new, fresh and different view of what happened.

My KING will still protect me, his humble citizen, just like he will protect the millions of citizens.

I believe in my KING, he is my KING and no one can take that trust away. They can twist the facts and "make it looks" otherwise, but it still doesnt change many facts.

DAULAT TUANKU!
