Nur Jazlan withdraws from deputy presidency race - Malaysiakini

Pulai Umno Division Chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who announced his intention to contest for the Umno No. 2 post in the party elections next March, is dropping out of the race after failing to get any nominations so far.

He made the annoucement at the opening of the Pulai delegates' meeeting today.

A few Umno leaders have been critical of his intention - describing him as an upstart who is 'over zealous' in contesting for the second important post in the party.

Nur Jazlan Mohamed at 42, is the youngest among the four candidates contesting for the No 2 seat. The other three are Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Ali Rustam, (both of whom are Umno vice-presidents) and party Information Chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib.

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has described Nur Jazlan, along with Ali Rustam and Muhammad Taib as just "jokers", while endorsing Tan Sri Muhyiddin for the post.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin, the International Trade and Industry Minister is leading the race with 56 nominations followed by Datuk Ali Rustam with 18 and Tan Sri Muhammad Taib, 11 nominations.
