Othman Saat dies at 80

Former Johor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Othman Saat passed away at 7.00 am today (Saturday, Oct 27) at the Sultan Ismail Hospital, Johor Bahru. He was 80.

Tan Sri Othman Saat had been hospitalised since last month for a lung infection and a gangrenous leg.

The veteran politican, who stepped down in 1982 after helming the state government for 18 years, underwent an operation to amputate the leg a few days before Hari Raya.

Othman was one of Johor’s most influential and colourful politicians.

His career in politics included a brief stint in the now-defunct Parti Semangat 46.

He will be buried this afternoon at the Mahmoodiah Muslim Cemetery. Bernama has the story.

Inna Lillaahi Waa inna illaihi rajioon.

Al fatiha.

Al fathihah to Allahyarham Tan Sri Osman Saat.

He was a Muo lad and he was a student of my late Tok Jantan. When I was growing up, I'd follow my father and uncles to his openhouse, every second day Hari Raya at Sg. Abong and he'd always hold us back, for chit-chats. Being a twelve year old then, I haven't the faintest idea what these men were so engrossed into.

When my Tok Tan passed away in Muo 25 Nov 1985, he came to the house the moment he heard and cried whilst reciting Quranic verses (this I remember well). He even went to the funeral at Batu 2 cemetry.

So did his men.

The next two days, he came over to the house, to check on my Tok Tina, whilst the whole household still in bereavements.

I will remember Tan Sri Osman for that kindness and fondness towards my Tok Tan.

Kak Ton, you must have covered the arwah quite a bit when you were in Johor. I never had the pleasure. Osman Saat's contributions to the Johor economy during the early years of the NEP were quite well-known, though. The Johor SEDC remains one of the most progressive, more than two decades after he quit as MB. Those who led the SEDC during its formative years will be able to attest to Osman Saat's commitment.

Allahyarham contributed a lot for Johore. Sadly, Musa Hitam did all he can to oust my grandad from the ministry.
Adding to that, the Sultan of Johore also instructed him to step down and leave office within 24 hrs in 1982.
Muhyidin Yassin was also biting the hand that fed him
Innalillahi Wa Inna Illahi Raji'un

His downfall began when he sided with Tengku Razaleigh. He was hounded by the income tax and ACA guys and he had to sell alot of his properties to pay off his taxes.
His datukship was withdrawn.
UMNO literally forgot him after his protege Muhyiddin defeated him at the Pagoh UMNO divional elections.
I visited him once after his defeat and he said, "Oh, you still remember me. No one comes to visit me these days. When I was MB they kiss my hands."
Every UMNO leader is treated with contempt when he falls. What can one expect from a party of opportunists.
