A quiet Eidul Adha

My 2nd daughter Jehan, with her kids (Ayra and Ayna on her lap) and my brother-in-law. TJ

Sitting from l-r: yours truly, my mom-in-law, Datin Zaiton, Adam and my biras, Nafisah. Standing l-r: Hashley, Ayesha and Johanne (Nafisah's children)

Jehan, Ayna, Shahriman (her husband) Ayra and my mom-in-law.

Left: Food galore...prepared by Puan Nafisah Ali
At my dad's: Food, glorious food ...

As with previous Hari Rayas, we spent the first half of the day at my mother-in-law's at her section 14 house. My 77-year-old-mom-in-law lives alone since my father-in-law passed away 11 years ago. And since she is alone, she doesn’t cook. So when it comes to special occasions like Hari Raya, we will bring food to her house and have a "feast" together with other members of my husband’s small family.

When I talk of "we", it usually means my biras, Picah (Nafisah, the wife of my third brother-in-law, Tajudin or TJ) and I. But this time, Picah called up to inform me that she'd be preparing "everything" (the whole works - nasi empit, rendang, serunding, kuah kacang & lodeh). How nice, I thought. My dear sis-in-law, Nafisah, is someone who you can always count on! She's one great lady. All I had to bring was ayam goreng, which I had promised my mom-in-law earlier.

The afternoon, as always, was reserved for my visit to my dad’s. The same goes for my sisters. They spent the morning at their respective in-laws. I don’t have any pictures at my dad’s because my siblings suddenly became camera shy.

”No need to take our pictures and put them in you blog. Cukup lah gambar yang ambil during the Singapore trip. Just take the picture of the food," says Nina.

Kak Ton,

Simply lovely to see clan taking time to come together. This camaderie is very impt building blocks of a strong emotional foundation. Am sure your grandchildren will carry on this tradition when the baton is passed on to them.

Hi adik,

Bukan begitu. I also wanted to take photos of the celebration at my dad's. Tapi not all my sisters were around and yang ada tak nak bergambar.

Dear hi&lo

I think family get-together, espicially during special occasions, are important in renewing kinship and building a strong emotional foundation.

Am glad my dad streesed this important aspect of "kinship" in us, hence you know the reason why we go back to Singapore every year.

Likewise, I hope my children will carry on this tradition and pass it to my grandchildren.

Dear Kak Ton,

This is the first time I'm leaving my comment although I've been a faithful reader of your blog since its debut on Oct 25.

I must agree with princessjournal--those juadah looked appetizing & tempting, so much so that I had to have lodeh with the works the very next day.

Btw, this is late but I just love the "siesta time at Nek Busu's" picture. The pix shows it all--"lepak" at its best!

Have a nice day, Kak Ton.

hi zhmi

Are you from Johore? Princessjournals is, if I'm not mistaken. Only orang selatan pandai makan lodeh. Lol!!

Oh that siesta time picture. He he he. That is kak enah, her daughter, syaira and son, adel and our nephew afizuddin.

Itu memang lepak betul after such a good lunch. Home-cooked sumore. Asam pedas, sambal belacan, ikan goreng, ikan kering & kuah bayam masak air campur keledek. Emak mertua jalan depan pun tak nampak, kata orang-orang tua. Lol!

Anyway, thanks for visiting, zhmi.

You too, hope you have a nice weekend.

Just to answer your query, Kak Ton: I'm orang Selangor. But I spent my early years in Singapore because my late father was with the British Army. Before returning to Malaysia, my family used to stay in Kampong Tulloch. And my only claim to fame is that my older siblings attended Jubilee Primary School (Rocky's alma mater)and that one of my sisters could even be his classmate:)

Sorry, Kak Ton. Its a littlbe bit "Basi".

Anyhow, Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Adha to you and Bang Lani.

maria a samad (kak ton) said...

hi zhmi,

That explains. So I presume you were brought up and received your early education in Singapore?

There are many Malaysian families like yours. I believe, Rocky's family are from Malacca, but his father aws stationed in Singapore. Hence the reason he was educated in Singapore so much so many think he is a Singaporean.
