Dr M says BN should contest Penanti seat

If Barisan Nasional (BN) did not contest the seat, the ruling coalition's members and supporters in the area would be disappointed, said the former Prime Minister.

According to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad BN had never been afraid of contesting in any elections even in PAS strongholds in Kelantan.
.
Dr Mahathir was commenting on the likely by-election in the state seat of Penanti after former Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin announced on Thursday that he was quitting the state assembly seat.

On Saturday Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Barisan may not contest the seat if there was a consensus among all component parties and argued that contesting in unnecessary by-elections was a waste of public funds.

While many BN leaders back the proposal for BN to give the by-election a miss, MIC president S.Samy Vellu appears to be the most adamant that BN contest in the opposition stronghold to safeguard the coalition’s “integrity, prestige and image”.

Yesterday, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also welcomed Datuk Seri Najib’s suggestion, saying he was happy if BN did not contest.

Dr Mahathir said that when he was prime minister, Umno never withdrew from any election, including in Kelantan, a PAS stronghold.

“Winning or losing is a separate matter but if we do not contest then the other party has already won,” he said.

IMO Barisan should contest the seat. This is part and parcel of the democractic.

A vancancy has been created and the only way to fill it is by an election.

Why concede defeat? Many have said that Penanti is a PKR stronghold. But if one is to look back at the results of the 2008 GE, Fairuz won by 2,219 majority.

He garnered 7,346, whereas the BN candidate obtained 5,127 votes.

BN/Umno still has substantial support.

So why deprived its (BN/Umno) supporters from exercising their right?

anak p.pinang, I'm with you and I totally agree with the good doctor that BN should give a chance to the voters to exercise their right in choosing the candidate and party to represent them.

Obviously the one they voted for had betrayed their trust by stepping down as their representative.

If that is what the Pakatan wants, let it be.

It is for the benefit of the people. But both BN and Pakatan better put up a good reliable candidate without any baggage.
