PAS wins Permatang Pasir

PAS has won the Permatang Pasir state seat by-election in Penang today with a majority of 4,451 votes.

The majority however had decreased by nearly 900 votes since the last general election which saw the party winning by 5,433 votes.

The Election Commission announced that PAS candidate 52-year-old Mohd Salleh polled 9,618 votes while BN's Mohd Rohaizat Othman, 38, (pic left) garnered 5,067.

Voter turnout had also decreased this time around to 73 per cent which the Election Commission chief Abdul Aziz Yusof blamed on the A(H1N1) outbreak.

In the previous election, the turnout was 82.6 per cent.

The by-election in the heart of Anwar Ibrahim's parliamentary stronghold of Permatang Pauh was held following the death of PAS state assemblyperson Mohd Hamdan Abd Rahman on July 31.

This is the eighth by-election since the March 8 polls last year.

With this victory, Pakatan Rakyat has taken seven with BN only emerging victorious in Sarawak's Batang Ai contest. - Malaysiakini

Voters in Permatang Pasir have stood firm in support of PAS,despite the onslaught by BN and Umno. Alhamdullilah.

The big majority only prove that Pakatan Rakyat is unbeatable in Anwar's home country despite Umno's attempt to potray him as a "penghianat."

Congratulations PAS!

The DPM talked of "wind of change".

Hahaha! Another wind of change in favour of PR.

PAS has won with the same support from Permatang Pasir voters.

Total turnout this year was 14,685 voters, and those who voted for PAS was 9,618 which is 65%.

Total turnout for 2008 election was 16,575 votes and those who voted for PAS was 11,004 which come to about 66%.

What it means is that support for PAS remained solid.

Congrats PAS despite having to face the onslaught of the well-oiled BN election machinery.

Ouch. Must be painful for the DPM after having received feedback from Umno members on the ground to expect a wind of change in Permatang Pasir, which came to naught.

Boo hoo.
