The result was announced by the Election Commission's returning officer at 9.29pm, according to Malaysiakini.
"The win shows that Pakatan Rakyat is aviable coalition. This win is not just for PAS but for Pakatan Rakyat," said PAS vice-president Ahmad Awang.
PAS candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut, obtained 32,883 votes compared to Barisan Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, who got 30,252 votes. The Independent candidate, Azhazudin Mamat, received 193. There were 665 spoilt votes.The by-election was held following the death of Kuala Terengganu member of Parliament Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28.
In the 12th general election in March last year, Razali defeated Mohamad Sabu of PAS and an Independent candidate, Maimun Yusuf, with a 628-vote majority.
With this victory the Opposition now has 82 seats in Parliament. Barisan now has 137 and the remaining three seats are held by Independents.
At press conference tonight, deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak rejected the suggestion that the defeat in Kuala Terengganu meant that the voters had spurned Barisan Nasional or that it had reflected badly on his leadership.
"We accept this defeat, this decision of the people. In a democratic system, the people's voice is supreme," he said.
"I am confident that in the end the people will be confident of BN," he added.
Also present were the BN candidate Wan Ahmad Farid Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said and Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

PAS victory is expected in this predominantly malay constituency.It is yet another proof that UMNO is getting increasingly irrelevant!This is indeed good news for Pakatan, and a much anticipated boost for it in the coming Sarawak State Election.Maybe, even before the 13th General Election, we will have a new Federal Government under a new viable coalition with a new agenda for a multiracial, multicultural Malaysia where there is more equality and less racial dicrimination.
This a wake-up call for BN and in particular for Umno.

Poor guy. What else could he say.
I think it is certainly a blow to him. After all he led the campaign Two blows in a row in two by-elections held after the GE in March last year.
The Opposition won with bigger majority in both by elections - Permatang Pauh & in KT.
Isnt the result tellingt? That the voters have rejected the BN.

I suppose that is a natural response. But it seems Najib is in a denial mode.
BN defeated in two by-elections less than a year after the March general election last year. And both by-elections results saw higher majority votes for the opposition despite the goodies offered to the voters during the campaign.
What does that tell you? The days of the BN are numbered. People want change. Real change. Period.
Time for change!
