Journalists urged to stop Parliament boycott...

Bernama reported that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has urged journalistsl to stop their boycott of parliamentarians after they were barred entry into Parliament's lobby.

Zaid was quoted as saying that journalists should be given ample opportunities to cover parliamentary going-ons.

About 100 journalists covering Parliament staged a boycott yesterday morning after they were denied access to the lobby. They refused to attend press conferences or take down statements, although they covered developments in the chamber.

"Press freedom is important and I think media personnel should be given fair accessibility to carry out their work," Zaid said when met after launching the book "Sharing the Nation: Faith, Difference, Power and the State, 50 Years After Merdeka" at Universiti Malaya here Tuesday.

Also present were the authors of the book, Noraini Othman, Mavis Puthucheary and Clive Kessler.

Tok mommy,

I hope the reporters covering parliament wont give in easily and will fight for their rights.

I am sure you agree with me, being a former journalist yourself.

There must be some logical reason for barring the journalists... Whatever it is, I hope they got it covered. I am sure they do not puposely want to NOT allow the reporters to come in, that is a little bit pointless?

Dr. Azizah as Pakatan Rakyat leader made a statement saying that "Tindakan menyekat petugas media membuat liputan berita di lobi Parlimen buat pertama kalinya dalam sejarah Parlimen Malaysia hari ini adalah satu tekanan terbaru kerajaan melumpuhkan peranan media"

She needs to remember that by urging the public to boycott Utusan and Berita Harian, she is also "melumpuhkan media".

Tuan Pandikar the Speaker specified that 5 crew media can be present in the Parliament lobby to cover the proceedings. So Dr Azizah should get her facts right too. The Parliament is NOT boycotting the journos.

Mungkin benar, isu keselamatan di dalam Parlimen tidak boleh dikompromi. Jadi usaha2 utk memastikan ianya selamat mestilah dibawak berbincang semula.

what elected leaders? you got it a little bit wrong zaitgha. It was the Parliament Speaker's decision, not the government or the PM or anything. Altho Nazri might have a say in it too. But that Nazri, ala you know him...
