PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi wants an immediate decision to be made on the use of English in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science to prevent a bigger issue from cropping up.
The Prime Minister said the government acknowledged that there was strong pressure from the people, especially the Malays, who were giving much attention to the matter.
"I hope the decision will be made immediately. Otherwise non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will continue to put pressure and create a bigger issue," he told reporters after launching the novel, "Dragon Fire Hammer", here on Saturday.
Abdullah said the Education Ministry had held several meetings with the NGOs to discuss the matter.
However, the Education Ministry was not prepared to announce the nature of the decision taken for the time being.
"With the examination results providing the rationale for the ministry to decide, I believe the decision made will be in the best interest of the people and our future," he said.
The use of English in the teaching of Mathematics and Science since 2003, which had drawn much controversy, had been disputed lately with questions being asked whether it should be continued or otherwise.

Sape yang anti PPSMI ni sumer bengong. Tak pkir panjang. Jumud. Aku skrg keje kat Spore,company besar field oil n gas lagi. gaji 7-8k sebulan wpun x sampai 2 thn grad. Alhamdulillah, rezeki. Tapi pandai b.inggeris atas kertas je (written english). spoken english hancus. colleagues sumer xtau bahasa melayu. Aku gagahkan juga berckp. Macam mana org nak promote? Kalu ada PPSMI bleh gak bebudak skrg belajar menguasai BI. Aku ada member masa kat UTM dulu. Subjek SPM sumer score. Tapi BI x kredit. wat paperwork kena maki ngan lecturer sebab translate word by word. x ke bengong tu. masuk industri, takde sape nak wpun 1st class degree sbb BI hancus. So nak senang, diorang amik Cina. Pastu org melayu marahkan govt sebab graduan xde keje. Itula, orang Melayu. Pikir la… X kemana bangsa Melayu kalu org Melayu jadi kuli je, nak naik kena tolak sbb communication skill xde. Bini aku lagi kesian.Ada master in land admin, tapi skrg surirumah. Saper nak byr PTPTN dia? aku gak...
Di-Singapura ah pek jual ikan pun boleh berbahasa Inggeris.
Mak cik jual mee rebus di-Geylang Serai pun fasih berbahasa Inggeris.
Aci di-Serangoon Road yang jual tosei pun pandai berbahasa Inggeris.
Tetapi mereka tidak kurang pun jati diri sebagai bangsa masing- masing.
Mereka yang membantah penggunaan bahasa Inggeris adalah kerana kepentingan politik.Dan mereka inilah sebenar-nya penjahanam bangsa melayu!

What is our lame duck outgoing PM trying to imply.The decision has to be made by the Cabinet and not the Education ministry!Is he trying to discredit his predecesor? A bit below par lah for a PM!The results of the UPSR last year clearly show that the vast majority of the pupils can cope.If any group is to be blamed for the students not doing better in the rural areas, it has to be the ill-trained, underqualified teachers!

Saudara Epul, nasihat saya, jangan mudah kata "sape yg anti PPSMI ni sumer bengong" Nilai kenyataan anda sendiri. bunyinya seperti anda yang bengong.
Saya pernah bermastautin di A.S selama 18 tahun, sekarang bekerja sendiri sebagai penterjemah (BI-BM) dengan pendapatan yang amat lumayan dan ofis saya hanya di rumah. Saya jg seorang ibu sepenuh masa. Lagi sekali, gaji saya amat lumayan, melebihi gaji anda sendiri. My point: saya menentang PPMSI. Kenapa? Dari segi pendidikan, PPMSI tidak sesuai. Bahasa Inggeris adalah bahasa penting, sayangnya, mengajar Matematik dan Sains dalam BI adalah langkah "bengong". Secara sambilan, saya mengajar kelas tambahan kepada anak-anak tahun 6 (semua subjek) kerana kasihankan mereka. Saya TAHU kerugian dan kesusahan yang mereka tanggung. kerajaan harus mencari kaedah sesuai mengajar BI (seperti PHONIC) dari peringkat awal usia anak2 dan bukan melalui PPMSI. Ini nyata salah.Untuk pengetahuan saudara, tidak ada negara dalam dunia ini yang mengajar Mat dan Sains kpd generasi muda mereka dlm bahasa asing ; tidkak Jepun, tidak perancis, tidak negara2 Eropah dll. Tahukah anda? Siapa sebenarnya yg "bengong"?
