Anwar: In that case, give us a walkover...

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has shot back at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's complaint that the enforced Penanti by-election was 'a waste of public resources' by suggesting that Pakatan Rakyat be given a walkover. - Malaysiakini.

"We will heed the call from the prime minister that we shall not waste public resources", said the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leader.

"I call upon the BN and Umno leadership not to field any candidate against PKR in the Penanti by-election and give us a walkover.

"It will not only save taxpayers' money, time and energy, but also will be consistent with the premier statement," he said to some 500 party members in his Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency last night.

He also fired a shot at Datuk Seri Najib for suggesting that PKR was playing a political game by forcing the Penanti by-election, by taking a swipe at Umno-engineered power grab in Perak early this year.

"Isn't that a political game?" he asked.

Datuk Seri Najib had, earlier in the day, criticised PKR for playing political games at the time when the nation should be united in focusing on solving the global economic crisis.

He said that Pakatan was forcing people to endure another by-election with the resignation of former Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin as the Penanti state representative.

The upcoming Penanti by-election would be the sixth to be held since last year's general election in March, after Permatang Pauh, Kuala Terengganu and Bukit Gantang parliamentary, Bukit Selambau and Batang Ai state by-elections.

The Election Commission is scheduled to announce on April 24 the status of the state assembly seat and the date for the by-election if a vacancy occurred.

At the gathering Datuk Seri Anwar justified Fairus' resignation as 'proper and correct' given the circumstances that he was entangled in graft investigation by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Right on.

I agree with Najib. By-elections are a waste of public funds.

Am suggesting as what DSAI has advocated thatt BN shows its commitment to reduce politicking in the country by announcing that it will NOT contest this by-election.

After all, Penanti is in the P.Pauh Palrliamentary constituency, DSAI's home counrty, so to speak. There's no way that BN can wrest it from PKR.

iTS A WASTE OF MONEY, WASTE OF MONEY.

BETUI, BETUI. CORRECT. CORRECT.

For once I agree with DS Najib. Too costly. The money spent in past by-elections could have been put to better used.

Didnt Anwar give an assurance that there would not be a by-election in Penanti because he said Fairuz would not step down as its state assemblyman?

I read it here:

So what has happened since?

BN should be wise enough to throw in the towel, or it would get a terrible trashing. The previous DCM should be commended for having the courage to resign and not give in to temptations when faced with problems which would affect his party adversely.Unlike the two frogs in Perak who were thinkly of themselves, Fairus's action is in the interests of the party. He might be young and inexperienced but he certainly showed that he has integrity which people like Hee did not have.
