Nurul Izzah - kidnapping of Asmawi deeply regrettable

Newly-elected Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is pleading to the persons who have taken Asmawi bin Jalalludin to return him to his family.

Describing the kidnapping as a tragedy, she said "it is yet another addition to the rising number of kidnappings and brutal slayings of children in Kuala Lumpur."

Asmawi, 11, has been missing since March 9 after he had gone to play with his friends at the Kampung Kerinci flats about 200m from his house.

There is a need to increase the efforts to avoid such occurrences in the future like stepping up police patrols in housing areas, she said in a statement posted on her website.

Nurul Izzah, who said she visited the family of Asmawi two days ago, hopes the federal government would provide more resources and assistance for the Police force to make policing and crime prevention more efficient.

"A clear presence of police officers in such areas would help in keeping criminals or potential kidnappers at bay."
