Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim believes that some Barisan Nasional members were behind the decision to get Bintong assemblyman Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu appointed as the new Perlis Mentri Besar despite him getting the acknowledgement by the Prime Minister to take up the post.

Expressing disappointment with the appointment, Shahidan said he believed that it was the doing of Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid.

A Bernama story had earlier reported that the Raja of Perlis has given his consent for the appointment of Bintong state assemblyman Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the new Menteri Besar of Perlis in place of Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

A statement distributed to reporters gathered in front of Istana Siraj by the Raja of Perlis' private secretary, Mohd Adib Zakaria, at 2.40pm yesterday said the appointment was made under Article 39 (2) of the Laws of the Constitution of Perlis.

Earlier, Shahidan was seen entering the Istana at about 11.40am for an audience with the Raja of Perlis where he presented the letter of appointment issued by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Tuesday.

When approached by reporters, he said his appointment as menteri besar had yet to be decided although he received the appointment letter on Tuesday.

"Right now, it's final from the prime minister...it's me (for the menteri besar's post). The Raja has the power to determine who is elected," he said.

"But the Raja's decision was to appoint another person, I do not know why," he said, adding that he was still Mentri Besar for another 120 days.

He also said that no one should go against Abdullah's decision but should instead respect his leadership.

kak ton,

According to the Star a constituional crisis is looming: not only in Perlis but also in Terengganu.

Idris Jusoh, Pak Lah's choice for MB Of Terengganu wont be attending a meeting of the Regency of Council scheduled at Putra Jaya today.

As to Dr Md Isa, he has already accepted the appointment from the Raja of Perlis,
* Pak Lah standing by his decision to have Shahidan as MB
*Co0nstitution on the side of Rulers on naming of MB
* Najib to meet Perlis Barisan Nasional assemblymen.

Kak Ton,

Am not a lawyer to comment on Constitutional laws. All I know is that Rulers are above politics. Their Majesties are empowered to make decisions for the good of the rakyat without the encumbrances of politics.

When politicians become too powerful, the rakyat looks up to the Ruler for protection.

In the past, Rulers had their excesses. Reminded of Tun Hussien Onn's era when a particular Sultan removed the MB on personal grounds.

Then came Tun Dr Mahathir. The Rulers have to abide by ruling party with regards to signing of Bills.

For harmony and running of govt, the 2 extremes will bog down the system.

The Raja's right to appoint MB under the respective state constitution is very wise if exercised correctly, tho opened to abuse.

We need balance of power among the various institutions to bring out the best for the people.

Can't agree more with you.

On the selection of Shaiden as MB of Perlis by the PM, here's what Prof Shad Farouqi says:

Under the Perlis Constitution, it is the prerogative of the Raja of Perlis and not the Prime Minister to decide who commands the confidence of the majority and should be made Mentri Besar after the elections."

"...now that the appointment had been made, Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu could only be dismissed by the state assembly."

Dear all

I am an xpert on law, constitutional or whatever.

But believe I represent the hundreds of party workers in Perlis who stayed up late for two weeks working for UMNO for free. ( our species do exist)

We are well aware that the people won't vote for BN if not for shahidan kassim.not this time. anwar is too strong, intelligence and charismatic. i heard hundreds of voters who said they won't vote or will vote for PAS if not for shahidan. at the same he has radzi and azmi who are trying their very best to destroy him.But he won through-bear in mind Pas Perlis has the deputy mursyidul am.

When finally the raja chose mat isa sabu what do you expect the rakyat felt? and what about UMNO survival in its darkest moments.

I can tell you that UMNO will live on. it will rise up with millions fighting for it! because blood is simply thicker than ideals.

The present govt in Perlis is legal and constitutional. That much I know-but don't insult us to say that it is a BN govt. Please don't.
