Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein will not defend his post in the party election in December to make way for a new face after leading the movement for 10 years.
“We have to look forward. We have to do changes and reforms, re-build the party and the wing. And if the Youth is still in a situation where they don’t know what my plans are come December, that becomes a barrier for us to move forward.
"The younger generation is demanding and hoping that we transform the youth wing and party. I believe that after leading the movement for 10 years, the time has come for me to make way for a new face," he said today.
On whether Youth members are courageous and mature enough to choose a new leader, he said "yes" and he welcomes a contest.
He said he was making it clear now to those who feel qualified to hold the post to offer themselves according to the normal process and let the delegates decide.
So far Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo had said they would offer themselves as candidates for the Youth chief post if Hishammuddin declined to defend it.
Asked whether his vice chief Khairy Jamaluddin agreed with his decision not to contest, Hishammuddin said it is his right to do so.
Asked whether he wants Khairy to contest for the Youth chief post, Hishammuddin said: “It is not for me to decide. "
Khairy had no comment when contacted while Mukhriz could not be reached on his mobile phone.
Hishamuddin refused to openly endorse a possible successor although he has a personal preference saying he would rather keep it to himself " because I have only one vote."
"We'll see how the delegates decide in December, otherwise how are we able to move forward to do what the people want us to do, and to redeem ourselves following the last general election results," he said.
Hishammuddin reminded Umno Youth members that their tasks ahead were to rebuild the party, to redeem themselves, and to listen to party members and the people at the grassroots level.
"We have no time anymore to think about positions, to go after this and that because our duty is to rebuild the party and restore party members' spirit especially in certain states," he said.
Hishammuddin said the rebuilding of the party should be done through transformation and regaining the support of the people on its struggle.

Keris-wielding Hisham is one reason for the terrible performance in the recent GE.
His keris wielding acts has caused a lot of anger & resentment. He should be tried for inciting hatred & bloodshed.

Could it be Khairy? After all he made sure that no one contested for the No 2 post so that KJ won uncontested.
Strange Kj keeping mum. His waiting for the right time.
I think Mukhriz gonna slug it out with KJ. Dont think KJ likes to be sidelined, keep quiet and just watch.
I believe Khir Toyo said he'd willing to withdraw from contesting and pave the way for Mukhriz.
It' going to be interesting to see the SIL and the son of the former Pm fight it out for the no. 1 post.

Mengapa beliau membisu seribu bahasa? Bukan kah beliau mengganggap dirinya antara yang paling layak merebut jawatan Ketua Pemuda?
Mungkin sekarang belaiu sedar dalam keadaan sekarang beliau tidak mempunyai taring lagi dan kekuatannya sudah tumpul.
Khir Toyo dan Muhriz adalah musuh utama Khairy dalam Pergerakan Pemuda Umno.
Mukhriz disabotaj beberapa tahun lepas sehingga tidak layak bertanding jawatan Naib Ketua, kerana tidak cukup kouta pencalonan.
Setakat ini, Khir dikhabarkan sedia untuk bergabung dengan Muhkriz dan memberi laluan kepada Mukhriz bertanding Ketua Pemuda.
Ini merupakan ancaman paling besar kepada Khairy.
Pada pendapat saya, Khairy sekarang sedang "melihat dan menunggu" sebelum mengambil langkah selanjutnya.
Good riddance, keris-mudin. You havent shown yourself to be much of a leader, except to kiss the keris at every umno assembly.
